Do you relish using so many cancer causing chemicals while washing your clothing?
Can you wash your clothing a few times without using any laundry detergent because you have so much residue still left on your clothing and towels even after doing a double rinse?
Do you enjoy breathing in the toxic fumes of the chemical fragrances from your detergent and fabric softener?
Do you think the price of laundry detergents have gone through the roof and keep soaring higher and higher?
If you want a cleaner and less expensive way to wash your laundry then perhaps you would like to know a quick and easy way to make your own without toxic ingredients. You won't have any residue left on your clothing, nor will you be breathing any nasty chemicals that are covered up with heavy perfuming.
All it takes are three simple ingredients that are sold at Macey's.
- Fels Naptha Soap
- Borax
- Arm & Hammer Washing Soda
All Non-Toxic!
There are recipes on the Internet with tutorials for making these three ingredients plus water into a gel like soap. I made one bucket full and while it cleaned very well, I just didn't like having a bucket load that I had to worry about spilling. And I knew I would at some point. It is just inevitable. Of course I could have transferred it to empty jugs... but, I just didn't. I am so used to using powdered laundry detergent that it was just a different experience for me. Also, after trying the powdered version it was just more work.
Some people believe the liquid works better, some say they can't tell the difference. If you want to make the liquid and the dry and compare please post and tell us if you found a difference.
On to the instructions for the DRY version:
- Grate the Fels Naptha soap
- Into a old heavy duty food processor add one cup each of the grated soap, borax, and washing soda.
- Put the lid on and process for a few seconds to turn it all into a fine powder.
- Pour it into a container and use 1 ounce for each wash load.
One ounce is equal to about one tablespoon. You may want to use a bit more on heavily soiled or sweaty stinky items. When I say a bit more, maybe one more Tablespoon. Now just think of the savings. Savings on your pocketbook and saving on your health.
- You probably have an old processor hanging around either in your home or garage, if not... then go to Deseret Industries or your favorite thrift store and buy a food processor. It really doesn't matter if you have one set aside just for your soap making or not... it's just soap in the end, and it washes clean!
I grate up several bars of soap at once so I can make several months supply at once. A food processor is not necessary! Since I like to have a finely powdered version I use one, but it works the same if it is finely powdered or just grated and mixed together.
For fabric softener, just add vinegar to the rinse water. It takes away static cling, disinfects, and deodorizes all at the same time.
