What if ... that's a great way to start thinking about what you need. So, what if for some reason I can't use my flushing toilet? Let me tell you if you are like me, and I'm sure most people are; I really appreciate my toilet and toilet paper! But, what if?
Most people who go camping probably have a camp toilet, and you already know which ones really work. But, have you ever thought that you may even be in your home when you can't use your toilet. Perhaps the pumping stations are down, or flooding has occurred in your area. It would be a good idea to obtain a portable toilet of some type. I have not posted pictures of every toilet available, just some of the more popular ones available. Many are similar, and you'll be able to find a large variety by just doing an online search. I know this is not a topic most of us want to discuss, but, well we all need one or more.

I do have some thoughts on some not to get, as well as some choicer varieties. I have included pictures, and some descriptions I was able to find. Some I have included my ideas about. But in the end, it is still your choice due to your preferences and your budget.
A portable toilet should be in your supplies and also make it easy to get to. Don't hide it away way up high in the top of the garage. You may need to get to it quickly when the need arises.
The following is probably one of the most popular. I'm sure most of us have a story about these. They are cheap, and don't always work well.
Camp Toilet about $13
Let me tell you why I would NOT purchase this. Many years ago, my uncle who was just of average height and weight, (He was never overweight) had one of these during a camping trip with our family. He and his wife refused to use a pit toilet. OK, I didn't want to use a pit toilet either, nor do I really want to use one today. But, my uncle and his family ended up having to use the pit toilets after all. He was not feeling well and having extreme potty problems, when the legs collapsed on him. It was not a pleasant experience for him, nor his wife. So, as I'm sure you have a horrible mental picture of his distress at this point. Please use my uncles unhappy moment as your reason for not purchasing one of these toilets.
The following is the description I found on the Internet
Product Description
The Stansport toilet is the no-frills, low-cost folding toilet option. It is lightweight and very easy to carry because of its compact storage and store-able design. It will work for your hiking, camping, mountain climbing, backpacking, or any outdoor fun activity that requires you to pack and go in just a few minutes, but at this price range, quality is compromised. The lightweight feature still allows you to comfortably sit in a plastic molded toilet seat with a removable plastic ring where you can securely place your disposable camping toilet bags. In addition the Stansport portable toilet is ridiculously easy on the pocket. At about $10 bucks, it really is tough to go wrong, even if it only lasts 1 weekend camping trip.
Disposal is not a problem with the Stansport toilet as the seat rings securely hold the toilet bag and is easily removed for bag disposal when needed. The package comes with the plastic bags that you need and has a storage that can fit your backpack.
The Stansport Toilet Bottom Line
If you're not yet ready to commit the additional couple of dollars on a higher-end folding camping toilet option, the Stansport portable toilet may be the right choice for you.

Reliance Hassock about $30
About 15 years ago we purchased this at Wal-Mart. The price doesn't seem to have raised. It is a bit lower than your average toilet, but it is sturdy, and is comfortable enough. If you are tall, you will want to put it on a block of wood to make it more at the normal toilet height. But, I have found that to be true of all portable toilet that I've seen. What I like is you can store all your supplies on the inside. I have purchased lots of small garbage bags to line the little bucket with. The little bags that fit your bathroom waste paper basket are the perfect size to line the bucket with. Do not use plastic grocery sacks like you get at Macey's, Fresh Market, etc. because they aren't always sealed well at the bottom, and they will split and leak. Not a happy experience for anyone changing out the bag.
Many years ago, we lived in a home on a septic system, and it was raining like crazy for weeks. Thus, the septic system wasn't able to drain well with a saturated bed. We used this portable toilet for about a week. So, I know it works well, and stands up to repeated use.

Gotta Go toilet - $39.95
This is not something I would purchase. Think about using this over and over. Think about if this gets wet, you get the idea. It's too expensive for just a few uses. There are too many other affordable options. These do collapse, why? It's cardboard! I've seen them at Parley's Hardware in Orem, and I don't care how much they smiled and tried to talk me into buying one, let me tell you the answer is NOPE, not me.
Designed to hold "up to" a 275 pound person, this portable waterless toilet system is both, tough and durable. At 2 pounds, this portable toilet system can be re-used (If properly taken care of).
Made of strong, double wall, corrugated paperboard.

Reliance Fold-To-Go about $25
Not one I would buy, it looks a bit tippy with only three legs. I don't want to tip over and then clean up the mess! I would put it in the same category as the "x-frame" portables that collapse. This may not collapse, but it's too tippy on three legs. Anyone who uses it would have to be careful to sit on it just right at all times.
Pros and Cons of This Folding Camping Toilet
The Reliance Fold-To-Go is great because it's so easy to use. It fits easily into any camping toilet tent, which is great when you're at a campground where the port-a-potties are less than clean. The tall height and padded seat also make this one of the most comfortable collapsible toilet options on the market this year.
The Good
- User friendly
- Compact design makes it easy to store most anywhere
- More comfortable than other options
- Works well with disposable camping toilet waste bags
The "Not-so-Good"
According to some reviewers, the toilet legs can be a little hard to fold up. It takes a bit of practice, but once you get used to it, it's not hard to use at all.
Is the Fold-To-Go The Best Choice For You?
The Reliance Fold-To-Go Collapsible Toilet is a great option for those who want a super-simple option at the campground or on the go. It's one of the sturdier options on the market, and it's a good value. If you want a cheaper option than a flushable toilet that's also easy to use, this is definitely it. However, if you're uncomfortable disposing of waste bags or want a toilet that's going to lock out bad smells, this toilet isn't the best option, and you may want to consider a portable flush toilet instead.

Another one you will need a water supply available. But it is nice!
Product Description
Offering a 2.6 gallon freshwater supply, the Sanipottie 962 is the smaller brother of the Sanipotti 965. A great option for RV's, trailers, vans, or car camping, the 962 also works well for the bedside, at home, the job site, or potty training.

If the pumping station is down, or we are experiencing flooding, let me tell you a portable toilet will be a blessing. If we are having problems with the plumbing in our area the people down the bench will be getting something special coming up their drains from us farther up the bench. But think about it ... are there people above us on the bench? All the waste will come up the drains in the showers, sinks, toilets, etc. You can take a child's rubber, plastic type ball that is just a bit larger than the hole in your toilet. Shove it tight into the hole. Do the same for your sink, tub, and shower drains. This will keep the toxic waste from your neighbors out of your home. Nobody wants to receive a gift like that.
Besides obtaining a portable toilet, go out and purchase play balls for each of your toilets and drains. But, remember to purchase extra. You are going to shove it so tight into the drain you will probably have to pop it to get it out when it is no longer needed.
Remember one is none, two is one, and three is better than none. I'm not telling you to get three portable toilets, but having options available is a great idea.
